In the absence of Steelers running back Najee Harris, who has a minor injury to his foot, the younger players in the backfield now have a chance to show their abilities. Harris has been sidelined by the ongoing training for a week now.

Harris' foot was stepped on when the Steelers were doing team drills. The backups have done an awe-inspiring job at the training camp, which has impressed the coaches. The Steelers' much maligned backups at RB, Benny Snell & Anthony McFarland, have provided their most promising training camp yet. And the real standout has been Jaylen Warren.

The young player's performance impressed Mike Tomlin and the entire team. The Steelers are banking on Harris for the 2022 season. Tomlin is optimistic that Harris will be ready for the season starting in a few weeks.

Harris had a successful season last year, leading the NFL with 382 touches. Harris became the first rookie player in NFL history with over 300 carries and over 70 receptions. The Steelers intend to reduce Harris's playing time on the field by giving the aforementioned younger players more time on the field.

OC Matt Canada will have to manage Najee’s workload accordingly. Harris's goal this season is to have 500 touches, making him the first player in NFL history to have that feat.

The top players with the most touches in NFL history are James Wilder with 492 in 1984 while playing for Tampa Bay and Larry Johnson with 457 in 2006 while playing for Kansas City.

It’s safe to say the Steelers are going to need their backup backs to step up to the plate.
