When the news broke on June 5 that Aaron Rodgers finally decided to sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Steelers Nation most likely breathed a collective UGH. Most Steelers fans did not want this move to happen, including yours truly. Folks, this is a disaster waiting to happen.
I believe this could be an enormous failure not based entirely on how Rodgers might perform but more so because he has proven to be a locker room cancer. The current roster of players does not seem to mind that he is coming to Pittsburgh and will be their offensive leader, but they might very well be keeping their mouths shut on the situation.
They say tigers do not change their stripes so if that is the case, what we are getting in Aaron Rodgers is a moody, narcissistic, ego driven quarterback that will not hesitate to cause waves if he doesn’t like what he sees. He is 42 and while he did not have terrible numbers with the Jets last season, he is not exactly a coachable player and with Mike Tomlin not exactly an enforcer with his players, I believe Rodgers will have Tomlin wrapped around his finger.
I can’t see Rodgers wanting to run an offense any way but his own. What angers me more is what happens to Mason Rudolph. Having previously been shafted out of the starting role, the Steelers brought back Mason after dumping Justin Fields and Russell Wilson and immediately he returns to his role as a backup, something he did for years behind Ben Roethlisberger. To me, this is a royal slap in the face to Mason Rudolph. But Mason is the consummate team player, and he is taking this signing in stride without anger. Kudos to him but come on Mason…wake up!
The bottom line will be this scenario…if this ploy fails in a big way with Aaron Rodgers leading the offense, Mike Tomlin’s seat becomes red hot as does Omar Khan’s. If Rodgers plays poorly, expect Steelers fans at Acrisure Stadium will let him know they never wanted him in the first place with a chorus of boos.
As a Steelers fan, I will always root for victories. I have never rooted against one of our own players. With the Aaron Rodgers signing if he can create victories and get us to the playoffs and past the first round, then how can I not be happy about that? But no matter the outcome, I still DO NOT like they guy. He’s not likeable.
