A.J. Burnett:"I came to Pittsburgh, and I found A.J."

It may be old news to some, but catching up with former Pirates ace A.J. Burnett brought back feelings that have yet to be replicated since the last competitive Buccos team of a handful of years ago.

We just spoke with A.J. on the Yinzer Crazy Podcast (listen above) and he poured out some of his heart for Pittsburgh and what the city was able to bring out of him.

“It was just baseball, and nothing else. I had a good relationship with former pitching coach Ray Searage from my Marlins days and he was basically like man go out there and get back where you need to be. I’m not going to mess with you. And it was the perfect fit.” - said the current Hall of Fame nominee.

In 2014, Burnett left the Pirates for Philadelphia after a successful two year stint in the black and gold. But he admitted he had some regrets.

“Nothing against Philly, But I had that feeling of - man, I’m in the wrong dugout.”

“I was able to come back in 2015, mainly just to show the fans and the guys in the locker room this is where I want to end it.”

When he did return in 2015, the city embraced him like no Pirates Pitcher I had seen in my lifetime. That included surprising him with Batman signals in the Downtown Pittsburgh night skyline.

Burnett said: “I didn’t know it was going to happen. I saw the first on the bus coming into town and I looked back at Cutch and he had a big old grin on his face. So I think he had something to do with that.

“I always said Pittsburgh was my Gotham. And it is. And it always will be.”
